About
”Art picks up where Nature ends” Marc Chagall
I was born in the United States of Italian parents and attended The Cooper Union School of Fine Art in New York City with a scholarship grant.
In 1967 I moved to Spain and developed the style called Naif and built a home and studio with the proceeds from this style. In my scarce free time I drew from the model and once the house was paid for I gradually changed my style to one that expressed more closely my personal ideas and feelings.
I favor form as opposed to abstract, the latter of which I relegate to the background of my figure paintings. My first love is the human figure to whichI return again and again even after I have ventured into landscape or interiors.
In a blank pad I sketch out in pencil a composition. Next step is to draw in charcoal the compositionon on a prepared board.
I use wood panels to paint on as I have read articles which state that gallery and museum owners have been known to find canvases chewed by silverfish. Wood panels are also much less heavy when stacked up.
The theme suggests a color scheme and I then attempt to evoke a certain mood or feeling by the use of color. Color undoubtedly brings out emotions and moods and I also use it to actually form the figure in an attempt to inspire particular feelings.
I rely on drawings from the live figure as the basis for a good deal of my work but also use my imagination for certain compositions.
My main medium is oil but I also paint in pastel and watercolor. Watercolor is quite a challenge as it makes one work fast and is a training in quick decision making.
In my opinion there is so much unpleasantness and negativity in the world which expresses the dark side of the human race and as such there is more need for a counterpoint in the beauty created byartists, musicians and writers/poets. I am certain that many people are uplifted when they hear a beautiful voice or see a lovely work of art. So I hope I canl be considered to be in this more pleasant category.
